How to run a football quiz night

A good quiz night is about pace and fairness as much as the questions themselves.

  • Use rounds. Five rounds of six, as above, keeps energy up. Read each round from easy to hard so every team scores early.
  • Agree the rules up front. Decide whether spelling counts, whether half points are allowed (for example a correct scorer but wrong year), and whether phones go face down on the table.
  • Mark between rounds. Swap answer sheets between teams and read the answers aloud. The arguments are half the fun.
  • Add a tie-breaker. Ask a number question, such as “How many goals were scored at the 2022 World Cup?” (172, a record for the tournament), and give the point to the closest guess.
  • Mix the formats. A picture round, a “name the club from the badge” round or a quick-fire minute keeps things lively.

Keep the facts settled

The quickest way to ruin a quiz is a disputed answer. Avoid questions about current squads, current managers or a player’s present club, because they change. Stick to finals, winners, hosts and records with a fixed date, and phrase them in the past tense, as we have done here.

FAQ

How many questions should a football quiz have?

For a pub or home quiz night, 25 to 40 questions split into four or five rounds works well. It fills about an hour and leaves time for marking and banter between rounds.

Are the answers in this football quiz up to date?

Every answer here is based on settled facts up to the end of the 2024-25 season. We avoid anything that changes week to week, such as current squads, managers or transfers.

How do I make a football quiz harder?

Ask for exact years, scorers or scorelines instead of winners, add questions about older tournaments, and remove multiple-choice options so players have to recall the answer on their own.
