Champions League trivia is a favourite with football fans because the competition has seventy years of history, a handful of unbreakable-looking records and finals that people still talk about decades later. Below you will find a short history, the records worth knowing (all defined up to the end of the 2024-25 season), the finals everyone remembers and 20 questions with answers, from easy to hard.
A short history: from the European Cup to the Champions League
The European Champion Clubs’ Cup started in the 1955-56 season. Real Madrid won the first final, beating Stade de Reims 4-3 in Paris in June 1956, and then kept winning: the Spanish club lifted the trophy in each of the first five seasons.
The 1960s and 1970s belonged to different powers in turn. Benfica, Inter and Milan won it, Celtic became the first British winners in 1967, and Manchester United the first English winners a year later. Ajax won three in a row from 1971 to 1973, and Bayern Munich matched that from 1974 to 1976. English clubs then dominated for several years, including Nottingham Forest’s back-to-back wins in 1979 and 1980.
For the 1992-93 season the competition was rebranded as the UEFA Champions League, with a group stage and the famous anthem based on Handel. In 2024-25 the format changed again: the group stage was replaced by a single league phase of 36 clubs.

How to get better at Champions League trivia
- Learn the finals by decade. Knowing who won in each era (Real Madrid in the late 1950s, Ajax and Bayern in the 1970s, English clubs around 1980) makes most questions easier.
- Remember the firsts. First winner, first British winner, first final under the new name: quiz writers love them.
- Separate records from trivia. Record numbers change, so always note the date they are valid for.
- Play against someone. Answering under time pressure is the best way to find out what you really know. Our guide to a football quiz for friends in 1v1 explains how.
